Since many of the same principals who were involved in the 2008 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers are going to be involved in the 2010 Finals, I went back into the archives to refresh my memory as to performance.
If you recall, the Lakers came into that particular series as heavy favorites. They had a high powered offense, much more so than this season. The Boston Celtics featured a high powered defense. The defense won.
As you can see from the bottom of the chart, the Lakers finished the Finals with a Team Win Score average of 34.4. The Celtics on the other hand finished with a robust 46.6. Defense won.
Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom all came up very small in 2008. If that happens again, the Lakers have ZERO chance.
On the other hand, Andrew Bynum did not participate in that series and purportedly will be available for the 2010 Finals (he’s notoriously unreliable).
If you recall, the MVP of the 2008 Series amongst the national media was Paul Pierce. On my former blog, Bucks Diary, the MVP was Ray Allen, based on his outstanding Win Contribution.
