NBA Rookie Ranking (by Win Contribution)

Below is my second ranking of this season’s rookies according to the Win Contribution each has added to his team.  Remember, Win Contribution is not the same as “level of play”.  Rather it is an assessment of the amount of value or harm a player has done judged by both his level of play and the number of team minutes he has taken.  Thus, once you get to the negative Win Contributions, the rankings become a question of “Who has done the least harm?” rather than “Who is playing the best?”.  Generally this problem can be eliminated by establishing a minutes played cutoff point, but for this ranking I set that point very low (115 minutes of action).  For all subsequent rankings the cutoff will be much higher, and many of the rookies listed below will drop out.

Fields leads the race

As you will see, New York G/F Landry Fields retained and expanded upon his lead over the rookie field from the last time I did a ranking.  He is just playing very, very well.  LA Clipper PF/C Blake Griffin is also playing well, and he has moved up the rankings to number two.

You will also notice that very few rookies are making a positive Win Contribution, meaning most of them are dragging their team’s below the .500% mark, none more so than the awful Memphis G Xavier Henry.  NOt only is he playing very poorly, he is playing a lot of minutes, and that means disaster.  Henry will no doubt be in contention for my annual “20 Most Harmful” list.
