I took a look at the numbers for tonight’s showdown between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Michigan State Spartans. Its very, very close.
The Michigan State Spartans have a dominant defense and a futile offense. The Wisconsin Badgers have a dominant offense and a pretty good defense.
By the numbers, the Wisconsin Badgers offense gains 31.7% more yards per play than their opponents (not including South Dakota) have allowed to the rest of their schedule. The Wisconsin Badgers defense has allowed 14.5% less yards than their opponents have gained against the rest of their schedule. Thus, I give the Badgers a cumulative score of 46.2%.
The Michigan State Spartans have gained 2.6% less yards than their opponents (minus Youngstown State) have allowed per play, but their defense has allowed an incredible 46.7% less yards than their opponents have gained against the rest of their schedule. Thus, I give the Spartans a cumulative score of 44.1%.
So, the Badgers grade out a little better than Michigan State, but you have to remember that the game is being played in East Lansing. As a result, it should be a close game.
