Bucks fans might want to start worrying now

I just saw on Salon.com that Senator Kohl is retiring from the United States Senate. Might this be his moment to also divest himself of the Milwaukee Bucks? If so, he will no longer feel any pressure to sell locally (if he ever did, that’s a huge and unproven assumption on my part… he may simply have wanted things that way). Bucks fans may have just lost their greatest champion for the cause of keeping the Bucks in Milwaukee.

Anyway, it might be time to start worrying about the future viability of the team. But we knew this moment was coming sooner or later, sooner probably than later.

“Oh, no,” he said when asked if his ownership period had come to an end. “I really enjoy owning the team. At some point there will be another owner and it will be someone committed to keeping the team in Wisconsin.”

    I hope he’s right.

Thanks for the update, Blake. That is certainly good news. Of course, he can’t live forever. Once his estate gets hold of the Bucks, we could be in trouble.

It might be the case that he will insist that his estate sell only to a party who promises to keep the Bucks in Milwaukee. However, any such promise will be — at best — cold comfort for Bucks fans, because such a promise cannot be enforced. Once title to an item passes hands, the transferor cannot direct what the transferee does with that item.

      That’s what frightens me.
